East Canterbury Aviation
East Canterbury Aviation Ltd has been the sole NZ representative of RANS aircraft for 20 years. Founded in 1991, the company has imported over 100 aircraft kits. Owned by Russell Brodie, the company is based at the Brodie family's Rangitata Island Aerodrome, a registered airfield on the banks of the Rangitata River in South Canterbury.
The Rangitata Island Aerodrome has been involved in Microlight category flight training for a number of years using RANS aircraft. The fleet currently consists of an S-6ES Coyote (ZK-JHZ) and an S-10 Sakota (ZK-ECA) with an S-7 Courier and 2 further S-6 models under construction. The S-6ES, ZK-JHZ has now completed over 3,300 hours in its flight training role. This equates to approximately 12,000 take-offs and landings, from ab-initio to type ratings. The only maintenance to date, apart from a recover and regular engine servicing, has been one bent axle!
A few years ago, with the increase in fuel prices, Russell and Lynda decided to try the RANS Recumbant and Crank Forward bikes on the New Zealand market. They have ten different models available to test ride at the RANS Bike Shop on their Rangitata Island Aerodrome site. These have been selling well and visitors love to have a go, finding that although they look a bit different (and certainly attract a lot of attention) thay are actually very easy and comfortable to ride!
